Books: General Dog Knowledge

Dogs for Dummies
Marty Becker

This is our favorite general book about owning a dog! A must-read for any about-to-be-dog owner (even if you're not a dummy!).

Mine! A Practical Guide to Resource Guarding in Dogs
Jean Donaldson

One of the best sources we've found on the subject of resource guarding. As young dogs most corgis will instinctively guard food and toys. It is imperative that they be socialized early so as to mitigate this becoming a problem as they mature.

Resource guarding can be very serious and lead to overly assertive behavior with other animals, and with humans. It is critical that you understand the dynamics, and how to work the situation. This book is a wonderful guide.

Help for Your Shy Dog
Deborah Wood

People do not realize it, but the greatest behavioral issue with an adult dog placement isn't the aggressive dog, it is the overly shy dog. There are more of these than I ever would have thought.

We've had several extremely shy dogs in our rescue and have had to take special care in working with them and placing them.

I found this book to be very helpful and a great sanity check!

Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook
James M. Giffin, Liisa D. Carlson

Excellent general health reference.

The First-Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats (Prevention Pets)
Amy D. Shojai

Is there an animal doctor in the house?

When an accident or other emergency threatens your pet, every minute counts.

The Other End of the Leash
Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D.

This excellent book is well-written, in a style that is a pleasure to read. A book that more fully explains the interaction between human and dog and illustrates how to use that understanding to more effectively communicate with your dog. Not just assumptions and fluff, this author has a depth of research as the basis for her observations and conclusions. An extremely valuable tool for owners who want to more fully understand and enhance their relationship with their canine companions.

The HomeGardenReviews site has reviews that are quite accurate.

Books: Corgis

Dogzilla
Dav Pilkey
This is an adorable book about a giant dog, released from a volcano, who threatens the First Annual Barbecue Cook-Off in a mouse-inhabited town called Mousopolis. Illustrated in photo collage, it's a beautiful and wildly entertaining book. And Dogzilla is ably played by a Corgi! Our highest recommendation!
The New Complete Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Deborah S. Harper

Cardigan Welsh Corgis
Mrs. Henning Nelms and Mrs. Michael Pym

Welsh Corgis: Pembroke and Cardigan
Richard G. Beauchamp
